Market Review

Key index edges higher. FBM KLCI rose 3.38 pts to close at 1,344.1, lifted by gains in selected heavyweights. Gainers led losers by 362 to 241 while 291 counters closed unchanged, 476 untraded and 31 suspended. Overnight, the DJIA also leapt 148.65 pts to 10,896.91 as a successful Portuguese bond sale and planned budget cuts in Spain and the UK bolstered optimism the European debt crisis is subsiding. Taking the cue from the positive sentiments, the local bourse may stay in positive territory today. The key market news flow was thin, with among others, Berjaya Corp proposing to buy 70% stake of Ascot Sports for RM525m, while sources say the Government is to entrust the redevelopment of the Sungai Besi Royal Malaysian Air Force base to a consortium comprising LTAT and Malton. Pos Malaysia is said to be studying the possibility of taking over Transmile, AP Land and HELP in an education venture, Salcon aborts Riau water project, Dialog’s 3Q profit up 52.9% on more jobs, and Mudajaya’s earnings soar 258.9% to RM50.6m in 1Q.
